Introduction to Masters Study

A Distinctive Department

HandsLancaster's Sociology department is at the forefront of post-disciplinary social science research. It is especially well-known for its leading role in developing social theory by applying it to substantive research topics, such as gender, media & cultural studies, mobility, science and technology studies, environmental change and political economy. It sets the intellectual agenda and offers stimulating and cutting-edge Masters degrees. As one of the country's top 5 research departments, we will introduce you to emerging debates that are shaped by the very staff who will be teaching you. Our small-group teaching is supplemented by the exciting international research culture at Lancaster. This includes various research groups and offers a range of seminar series, reading groups, and research events which include invited speakers from around the world. The department provides a friendly, international and informal environment in which to learn and in which to develop a sociological analysis of the most important issues facing societies today.
