SOCL940: Critical Debates in Cultural StudiesCourse convenor: Debra Ferreday This is a core course for MA Media and Cultural Studies. This module introduces students to key theoretical debates in Cultural, Media and Film Studies. The course explores key concepts in media and cutlural studies by encouraging students to engage critically with theoretical texts and to reflect on contemporary debates in media and popular culture. We will examine a broad range of concepts, including:
We will draw on exemplary writings and case studies drawn from different periods in the development of the fields. Key critical readings and concepts are explored through case studies drawn from print, popular music, television, film and architecture. Throughout the module, there is an attention to the comparative aspects of cultural studies in transnational and global contexts.
