Dual PhDs with the Polish Academy of ScienceThe Institute for Sociology and Philosophy at the Polish Academy of Science (IFIS PAN) and the Sociology Department at Lancaster are world-renowned centres of scholarship in the social sciences. Since 1952 the Polish Academy of Science has undertaken world-class research on the remarkable changes to Polish society over the last century and has been a seat of learning that has attracted academic researchers from Eastern Europe who wished to engage in dialogue with the world. In the United Kingdom, Lancaster University was founded in the 1960s but over the last fifty years its Sociology Department has built up a global reputation. The two institutions have collaborated for the last five years on an English MA programme in social science run from the Graduate School for Social Research (GSSR) at IFIS PAN, which, since 1992, has built a reputation for excellence in its social science doctoral programme. About Lancaster Sociology DepartmentAt Lancaster, the Sociology Department has six research centres that provide an interdisciplinary focus for research activity around core themes:
About the Graduate School for Social Research, Warsaw In January 1995 the international jury chaired by Lord Ralf Dahrendorf and appointed by the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna awarded the GSSR the Hannah Arendt Prize, which was established by the Körber Foundation for institutions promoting reforms in the higher education system in Central and Eastern Europe. In October 2000 the GSSR received the Hannah Arendt Prize for the second time. Today the GSSR has 213 doctoral students, including 79 foreign students from 21 countries. About the DegreeThe Dual PhD programme is designed so that students can spend half their time at Lancaster and half in Warsaw Students are assigned according to the academic focus of their project to at least one supervisor in each centre. While they are resident in the centre they will have regular meetings with the local supervisor but will keep in touch with their other supervisor through email and Skype. Students will be expected to send an email at least monthly to both supervisors summarising their progress and future plans. There will be an annual review of progress according to the local procedures in each institution. ApplyingIn applying for admission to the Dual PhD programme, intending students should provide an outline of their proposed research. This will be used in selecting suitable candidates who, once enrolled, will revise the proposal in consultation with their supervisors. This process will identify suitable research methods and lead to an agreed training programme drawing on the resources of both institutions. The proposal will set out a programme of research that can lead to a written thesis, normally of eighty thousands words, written in English. The thesis must be prepared, submitted and examined according to the regulations of each institution, but its content must be the same. Fees for enrolment in the Dual PhD programme are payable to Lancaster University for the three years of continuous study at the reduced rate of £1000 per year for students from the European Union. For non-EU students, the figure will be £6000 per year. It is a requirement of registration under the scheme that students must spend at least eighteen months resident in Lancaster – this would normally include a period of nine months at the beginning of registration and nine months at the end of three years. These reduced rates are for enrolment to begin study in October 2010 and may be subject to change in line with other fee changes at Lancaster although the intention is to maintain the proportionate reduction for students enrolled on the Dual Phd programme. The normal period of registration for a PhD at IFIS PAN is four years but students who have completed an MA with the GSSR are able to count it towards their registration for the PhD. Initial application should be made to both the Lancaster Department of Sociology (using the online application system) and to the Graduate School for Social Research at IFIS PAN, making it clear that the application is for the Dual PhD programme. The scheme will be administered at Lancaster by the Director of Doctoral Studies in the Department of Sociology and in Warsaw by the Academic Director of the GSSR.
