I am currently in the second year of my PhD. My research explores the nature of sociological expertise in the context of policy-making. Having also done my BA and MA in this department, I feel confident in recommending Lancaster to anyone who values the serendipitous (and rare) combination of inquisitiveness and a pronounced preference for informality between students and staff.
I can thoroughly recommend studying at any level in the Sociology Department at Lancaster University, having completed a BA Sociology, MA Sociological Research and about to complete a PhD here! The scholarship you will encounter here is rich, diverse and interdisciplinary; the collection of several different research centers is a particular strength.The atmosphere is friendly, supportive and collaborative, too!

I am a first year PhD student funded by an ESRC CASE award. My research focusses on the contemporary transformations of the social care system in England. I chose Lancaster on the strength of its research record, its links with local, national and international academic and non-academic partners and the great support I was offered by my prospective supervisors from the day I approached them about doing a PhD. In my experience so far, Sociology is a very vibrant, stimulating, and welcoming department. I particularly enjoy the informality and creativity in student - staff interactions. |
