The Department of Sociology's First Year Courses

In your first year you will take three courses, of equal weight. One will be the course that you are majoring in, either Sociology or Media and Cultural Studies, and two other subjects. 

Three first year "Part I" courses based in the Sociology Department:

SOCLSociology 101

The Sociology 101 Course introduces you to sociological issues, ideas, concepts, evidence and argument by examining some key aspects of living in the contemporary world.

MCSMedia and Cultural Studies 101

The Media and Cultural Studies programme examines the complexity of cultural life providing the conceptual tools with which we can understand the production of messages, images, signs and symbols.

GWSGender and Women's Studies 101

Gender and Women's Studies 101 considers the kinds of power that women and men have developed, the forms of organisations and institutions in which they participate and the ways in which women have resisted marginalisation.

So you could take all 3 of your first year options with us, alternatively you can also choose from subjects in different departments.
