Welcome to the Lancaster Literacy Research Centre

The Literacy Research Centre at Lancaster University works to understand the role of literacy in all areas of social life and to improve communication and collaboration between researchers and educational practice. We welcome all practitioners and students concerned with literacy, including new MA and PhD students as well as other academic visitors. 

We are closely associated with the Department of Linguistics and English Language and the Department of Educational Research.

Literacy Research Discussion Group

The Literacy Research Discussion Group meets every Tuesday lunchtime in term time.

The Literacy Resource Centre is open every Tuesday between 2.30 - 4.00 pm in term time and other times by arrangement. Please contact us in advance if planning to visit.

Our current research interests include:

  • literacies and everyday life, including in the workplace

  • literacy ethnography and the anthropology of writing
  • multimodal literacies
  • literacies and prison life/education
  • early childhood literacy
  • literacies and the environment – global and local issues
  • learning literacies in  formal and informal settings
  • theoretical and methodological issues relating to literacy

Associated Organisations

The Research and Practice in Adult Literacy Group RaPAL is the only British national organisation that focuses on the role of literacy in adult life. We are an independent network of learners, teachers, managers and researchers in adult basic education. RaPAL was established in 1985 and is supported by membership subscription only. RaPAL publishes a bulletin three times a year and holds an annual conference.
