LRDG meetings held in 20002 November - Branca FabricioReading and critical thinking: an interdisciplinary approach to the EFL classroom. Talk about reading as social action in 10 yr old Brazilian children learning English as a foreign language. 13 November - Alexandra Jaffe University of Southern Mississippi"Packaged Sentiments: the Social Meanings of Greeting Cards". Alexandra's interests include language ideologies and literacy. Her recent book Ideologies in Action: Language Politics on Corsica is an ethnographic study of the Corsican language situation, focussing on language domination and sites of resistance. She is also guest-editor of a special issue of the Journal of Sociolinguistics on nonstandard orthography and nonstandard speech. 23 November - Anita Wilson'Mines was the door with the furry knickers pinned to it': literacy, gender and the rewards of ethnography' Anita has been working in a women';s prison in London; she would like to share some recent thoughts on gendered issues and the recognition of ethnography as an appropriate method for understanding literacies in social context.
