Helen Middleton-Price

Helen Middleton-Smith is Director of Nowgen, North West Genetics Knowledge Park. She has overall responsibility for delivery of the Nowgen project, and takes the lead on the Professional Education, Schools and Outreach work programme.

Helen has worked in human genetics since 1985. Following a period of post-doctoral research at the Institute of Child Health (ICH), London, she transferred her skills to the provision of genetics services and ran the Regional Clinical Molecular Genetics Laboratory at ICH/Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children (GOSH) from 1990. She gained her MRCPath in 1994 and was awarded FRCPath in 2003.
In 1996 she joined the Science Museum in London as Biomedical Science Adviser in genetics for the new Wellcome Wing exhibitions, opening in June 2000. Her role included identifying areas of contemporary genetics for exhibition to the public – including the human and social perspective – and to ensure the accuracy of the content. In addition, she was responsible for a major project to develop a computer interactive resource of background information on genetics and neuroscience for the Museum's visitors.

Helen is Chairman's Special Adviser in public awareness of genetics to the British Society for Human Genetics (BSHG), aiming to improve the interface between the lay public and BSHG members.
