Ethics in Research

All research involving human participants requires informed consent to be obtained from participants. However, before any data is collected, the research needs to obtain ethical approval. This applies equally to Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate assignments, as well as to dissertations, PhD theses and research undertaken by staff and visitors. For instructions, see the Faculty's procedures (To view these pages you will need to be on campus or using a virtual private network connection).

When you prepare your application for ethical approval, you should use this Information Sheet and Consent Form template and submit your edited version of these with your application.

A general guide and discussion of ethical issues in language studies is provided by the British Association of Applied Linguistics at http://www.baal.org.uk/about_goodpractice.htm.
