Educational institutions have been obliged by law (SENDA) since September 2002 to make their websites accessible to disabled users - yet how many of us are giving our websites sufficient consideration?
Apart from the legal aspect - no one wants to get sued - the moral argument for us as educators is compelling. Whilst a simple solution may be to take advantage of the loophole in SENDA i.e. to provide access in an alternative format, by doing so we are actually compounding the discrimination against the disabled as this could oblige them to make special arrangements. If you follow the simple rules outlined on the "Essentials" page, your websites can be brought up to standard with very little effort.
If you take the time to learn how to write accessible pages now, you will be able to ensure that any future pages you create are compliant. Compliant pages not only benefit disabled users, but will also perform better in a wide range of non-standard and poor quality browsers, work on new technologies and provide you with a higher degree of "future-proofing" as new technologies and browsers are developed.
