Context
The role played within the University by the academic Heads of Department is vital to our ongoing success. HoDs have the potential to play an instrumental role in the fulfilment of our institutional goals.
Some core components make up the transition to effective HoDs:
1. Cognition of the knowledge/process elements of the role
2. Demonstration of broad range of people skills
3. Courage and resilience in dealing with people and making decisions
4. Adoption of a vision or goal for the duration of the term in office
Aims and objectives of HoD training and support programme
With these factors central in our mind, we have formulated the following objectives for the five day induction and ongoing activities within the year. To
Welcome HoDs into the role
Provide HoDs with information around key topics that are central to the effective delivery of the role
Enable HoDs to draw on a range of practical suggestions & skills by which to manage people issues
Help HoDs feel more confident in their ability to be effective from the start of their term of office
Assist HoDs in identifying sources of support (each other, former HoDs, mentors, key subject matter experts) etc
Ongoing coaching and support (provided by external coaches including Deborah Dalley and Linda Feerick)
Point HoDs towards other resources/information
Next year's induction will take place in March 2013
