GENERAL
The Committee for Chairs and Readerships approves appointing committees for Chairs and Readerships, subject to report for formal ratification to Senate. The Vice-Chancellor, or the Pro-Vice-Chancellors or Faculty Deans or equivalents (see note), acting on his/her behalf, approve all appointing committees for grades 7 - 9. The Head of Department approves all appointing committees for grades 1- 6.
Where an appointment is to be made at a level to be determined, for example at Lecturer/Senior Lecturer, the appointing committee must be constituted in accordance with guidelines for the higher grade.
Appointing committees must, wherever practicable, include members of both genders who have received training in recruitment and selection.
All appointing committees have powers of co-option, although no member of staff still on probation should be so co-opted.
No person shall be a member of an appointing committee to appoint his or her successor or where the appointment is to be made at a level higher than his/her position.
1. PRO-VICE-CHANCELLOR
Vice-Chancellor (Chair);
- two lay members of Council;
- three representatives of Senate, not more than one from any faculty and/or College;
- president of LUSU or nominee for appoointments relating to the Colleges and Student Experience;
- the Vice-Chancellor may co-opt an external member holding a senior management role at another British university if it is deemed appropriate;
2. DEANS
Vice-Chancellor (Chair);
- two lay members of Council;
- three members of the Faculty concerned, nominated by the PRC, at least two of whom should be Heads of Department;
- one person who should be either a member of the senior academic staff from another Faculty of the University or a senior academic from another Faculty in the UK (Nominated by the Faculty PRC in consultation with the Vice-Chancellor;
- the Vice-Chancellor may co-opt a (second) external member if it is deemed appropriate.
3. PROFESSORS
Vice-Chancellor or Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Chair);
Members appointed on the recommendation of the Committee for Chairs and Readerships to include:
- (normally) three representatives of Senate: one the Head of Department, one from a cognate field (normally the Dean or equivalent), and one from a non-cognate field. A fourth member may be appointed if this is necessary to ensure the appropriate spread of representation (Department, Dean and the cognate and non-cognate areas);
- two or more persons from other universities, research establishments or other appropriate places;
- (If the Head of Department is a candidate, the department shall be represented by another professor in the department, or a former head of department if there is no professor).
- Members of Council are invited to participate in Professorial appointments and Angela Pearson (Secretariat) should be advised of all forthcoming vacancies to facilitate this;
4. READERS
Pro-Vice-Chancellor or Vice-Chancellor (Chair);
- members appointed on the recommendation of the Committee for Chairs and Readerships;
- three representatives of the Senate: one the Head of Department, one from a cognate field, and one the Dean or equivalent (if such a post exists in the relevant area);
- two or more persons from other universities, research establishments or other appropriate places.
5. SENIOR LECTURERS AND GRADE 9 (TEACHING ONLY) POSTS
Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Chair), in the absence of a Pro-Vice-Chancellor, the Faculty Dean will take the Chair;
- Head of Department concerned or his/her nominated representative;
- not more than three other persons including the Dean or equivalent (if the post exists in the relevant area and is not acting as Chair), at least one of whom should be from outside the department,
6. LECTURERS AND GRADES 7-8 (TEACHING ONLY) POSTS
- Dean (Chair), in the absence of the Dean, an Associate or Deputy Dean will take the Chair;
- Head of Department concerned or his/her nominated representative;
- not more than three other persons, at least one of who should be from outside the department.
7. RESEARCH POSTS
(i) Grades 6 and 7
- Head of Department or his/her nominated representative (Chair);
- Principal Investigator or grant holder;
- not more than two persons, at least one of who should be from a cognate area outside the department.
(ii) Grade 8
All such appointments to be made by an appointing committee as for grades 6 and 7 except that the Dean takes the chair.
iii) Grade 9
All such appointments to be made by an appointing committee as constituted for a Senior Lecturer.
8. PROFESSIONAL/MANAGERIAL POSTS
a) Grades 7-9
Faculty Area- Dean (Chair), in the absence of the Dean, an Associate or Deputy Dean will take the Chair;
- Head of Department/Unit;
- up to two others including a member of a relevant central services division/secretariat/library.
- Divisional Director or nominated representative (Chair);
- Head of section;
- up to two others including a member of an academic department.
b) Other Posts with a salary above spinal point 51
- Chief Operating Officer or Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Chair);
- Divisional Director or Faculty Dean;
- A lay member of Council or external assessor(where appropriate);
- Head of Section (where appropriate);
- A senior member of academic or Professional Services/secretariat/library staff;
9. UNIVERSITY SECRETARY, LIBRARIAN
Statutes 3(6) and 3(7) set out the composition.
10. POSTS IN GRADES 1-6
The actual composition is dependant upon the level of the post and whether it has any cross-departmental responsibilities. The Departmental Administrator or Chief Technician (or equivalents) will normally be present. Committees should comprise at least two members and a maximum of four.
Notes
The status of Faculty Dean equivalent is currently accorded to the University Secretary, the University Librarian and the Professional Services Divisional Directors.
