Disability Two Ticks Symbol

two ticks

Lancaster University has been awarded the Disability Two Ticks Symbol from 1 October 2004.

Jobcentre Plus awards the symbol to employers that agree to the following 5 commitments in respect of existing and future employees with a disability.

Disability is defined by the Equality Act 2010 as a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term (at least 12 months) effect on the ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

The 5 commitments How we achieve the commitments
To interview all applicants with a disability who meet the essential criteria in the person specification for a job vacancy and consider them on their abilities.

Job applicants are asked to declare a disability within their application.

HR Department show which applicants have disclosed a disability on the Candidate's Shortlisting form.

Recruiting Departments ensure applicants with a disability who meet the essential criteria are interviewed, and keep auditable records.

A requirement to provide, at least annually, an opportunity to discuss with disabled staff what can be done to ensure they develop and use their abilities.

The annual performance and development review (PDR) process is used to meet this commitment.

The process is the same for disabled as it is for all other staff.

To make every effort when employees become disabled to make sure they stay in employment. All possibilities for reasonable adjustment are explored, with the support of HR Department, Employment Adviser, Access to Work, and Occupational Health.
To take action to ensure that all employees develop the appropriate level of disability awareness needed to make your commitments work.

The Two Ticks commitments are an integral part of training courses and guidance material in the areas of Recruitment & Selection; PDR; Supervisory & Management courses; Disability and Diversity awareness courses, which all staff are encouraged to attend.

A variety of communications channels are used to increase awareness, including the web, newsletters and notice boards.

Each year to review the 5 commitments and what is achieved, to plan ways to improve on them and let employees and Jobcentre Plus know about progress and future plans.

We collect recruitment, PDR and other data to measure the effects of the commitments.

We will also seek the views of disabled employees and departments.
