A celebration of Excellence and Innovation
There are 2 award categories:
Pilkington Teaching Awards
For excellence and innovation in teaching, making a real impact on the student learning experience; raising the profile of excellence in teaching by supporting and influencing student learning, beyond the department or faculty if appropriate.
Outstanding Contribution Awards
Inclusive of all University roles and activities in Faculties, Central Services and all other areas, whether manual, technical, administrative, managerial, research, teaching or other academic role. Involves outstanding contribution over and above what is normally expected in the role. For excellence and innovation in activities, including: any support activity; community & college; doctoral supervision; commercialisation & knowledge transfer; media & communications; internationalisation strategy.

Any staff or student(s) can nominate an individual or team by completing a Nomination Form. Please let the people that you are nominating know, as they will need to sign the form to indicate they agree to being nominated. Pilkington Teaching Awards
Excellence and innovation in features of teaching, such as:
- carefully designed courses which, for example, integrate well with other courses, and pay due regard to what students already know, and relate what is taught to students’ planned careers
- supporting flexible and independent learning patterns for campus-based, distance and mixed-mode students; teaching styles and material provided for a diverse student population
- lectures which, even when presenting difficult material, stimulates student interest, while also developing academic excellence
- innovations and pioneering methods of teaching or assessment that contribute significantly to students' learning experience (e.g. developing students through creative project or laboratory work; effective application of e-learning/blended learning approaches, use of group teaching methods)
- designs which integrate academic theory with practical application
- evidence of engagement with relevant external bodies in the development of learning, teaching & assessment practice in the sector – through for instance collaborative projects and/or publications
Outstanding Contribution Awards
Examples of excellence and innovation in:
- Anyone in a support role who develops new approaches beyond expectation
- Community work undertaken for the benefit of individuals or groups locally or further afield
- Supporting college life at the University
- Supporting our internationalisation strategy
- High impact commercialisation or knowledge transfer activity
- Doctoral supervision
- Media and communications
- Early career academic who introduces innovation to research
