Colloquium 4: Regions as Reservoirs of Innovation

26 - 27 April 2007

Session I: Region to Region and firm to firm learning in Innovation

Innovation is typically regionally based, even in the virtual world. This makes region to region learning and inter firm networks a profoundly important way of developing understanding of innovation, whether in conventional or social enterprise. This strand of the colloquium highlighted the ways in which new knowledge combinations, through cross sectoral collaboration or past and future knowledge, can contribute to industrial innovation and regional re-generation.

Session II: Cultural and Creative Industries

International regional comparisons are also applied to the cultural and creative industries. In a second strand of discussion museums are seen as resources for innovation. This session included a discussion of the striking contrast between the heritage focus of UK museums with Continental Europe, where industrial museums have close ties with industry. It explored how innovation can truly be a bridge between past and future, through close dialogue between business and museums. The session was trans-disciplinary, embracing scholars and practitioners drawing its strength from geographical, intellectual and social boundary crossing.
