Session 1 - Urban and rural interactions

Urban lancs

Focused on: mobility and migration; maps and boundaries; changing definitions over time for different groups; features uniting and distinguishing urban and rural; 'perceived' and 'actual' urban and rural places; interactions between urban and rural places; regional capitals and regional profiles; regional policy; urban and regional identities; the Northern Way.

 

Session 2 - Townscapes and landscapes

Focused on: changes within urban townscapes and within rural landscapes; parallels between urban and rural aesthetics; the rural in the city and the city in the countryside; policies for townscapes and landscapes; the natural and the artificial; the public appeal of the visual; heritage and the legacy of the past; fashion and modernity; the native and the foreign; utility and spectacle; commodification of the visual; scapes, semiotics and icons; scapes and identities.

 

Session 3 - Urban and rural futures

market

Focused on: interactions between the urban and rural economies; demands placed on each area by the other's population; tourism; shifts and declines in subsides; centrality and remoteness; mobilities; future evolution; competitiveness in the past, present and future; spatial planning and policies; policy futures and what people want; scenario development and its utility.
