Tue 29 Nov 2005 - ResNet hardware failure

The core of the residence network failed because of a hardware fault, causing complete loss of service to the residences for about an hour in the afternoon. The hardware has been replaced with a temporary unit until next Tuesday morning when the correct switch will go back in. As a result the Residences Network and offices in Southwest campus will be affected. After reviewing the failure of the hardware, we believe that the failure had been present in a minor way for several weeks causing some performance problems and some users seeing no connection to the network for periods of time. The replacement unit should make a big difference to the performance and reliability of the network. The residence network team apologise for the problems, and are working with suppliers to ensure it does not happen again.
