Fri 26 May 2006 - RAS now out of service

The hardware in the Computer Centre supporting the dial-up 'Remote Access Service' (RAS) has failed. 'RAS' ceased to be a supported service on 29th July 2005. ISS have no plans to replace the failed RAS hardware. Alternative services are available, see http://www.lancs.ac.uk/iss/ras/ for information on alternative ways of remotely accessing the University network. Remote access by VPN is unaffected.

Wed 24 May 2006 - All systems ran without major problems

There was a brief break in the charged printing service in labs and public areas between 1300 and 1400, while the printing software was upgraded. Office printing was affected.

Parts of the exchange email system were temporarily unavailable between 1400 and 1600 for essential maintenance.

Tue 23 May 2006 - All systems ran without major problems

During the network at risk period (7am till 10am), work was undertaken to improve multicast support (TV on the network) on the campus network. Some disruption to multicast traffic occurred, but 'normal' traffic such as email and web browsing was unaffected.

Fri 19 May 2006 - Brief problem with WiNet in Engineering, and SPSS fixed in Grizedale Lab

Grizedale PC lab was closed today between 2.30pm and 3.30pm to fix the fault with SPSS in this Lab. SPSS should now be working in all PCs in this Lab.

Due to yesterday's network problems in 'Engineering' there was a brief problem with WiNet in the Engineering building.

Thu 18 May 2006 - Network Outage in Engineering, and Remote Desktop Access via 'RealVNC'

10:55 Network Outage - Engineering Building. A network outage has just been detected in the core network feeding the Engineering building. This will be affecting network connectivity to the Engineering, Whewell, George Fox and Pendle Buildings. ISS engineers are investigating the issue.

ISS have received reports of a serious security issue with the remote desktop application 'RealVNC'. If you use RealVNC you should upgrade to version 4.1.2 immediately. ISS have blocked VNC access from offsite to reduce the risk to the University network.

Wed 17 May 2006 - Brief WiNet outage

There was a brief outage on the WiNet service this afternoon when one of the Bluesocket controllers failed and didn't fail-over to its backup unit. ISS engineers located and fixed the problem, restoring service.

Tue 16 May 2006 - All systems ran without major problems

During the at risk period (between 8am and 9am) on the 16th May, switches were replaced in the following buildings: Graduate College Lab, Grizedale offices, Bailrigg House, Great Hall, Bowland workshops, Chaplaincy centre, Bowland A floor, Engineering A1a. Some brief disruption to network service was experienced.

Thu 11 May 2006 - Exchange-BE1 Server was unavailable

The Exchange-BE1 Server was unavailable due to a hardware failure. A replacement was be online by late afternoon. Users of Exchange-BE2 were uneffected.

Wed 10 May 2006 - Most systems running without major problems

There were be some breaks in the Exchange service on Wednesday May 10 between 1530 and 1630 to allow urgent security updates to the system.

Tue 09 May 2006 - Network Disruption

At 11:32am there was break in network connectivity, the problem lasted for approximately 30 minutes.

During the network at risk period today, network redesign work was carried out in the Ruskin Library. Work commenced at 7am and was completed by 9am. Minimal local disruption was experienced on network services. For further information see Campus Network Redesign .

At approx 11:35, one of the campus core switches failed. This caused loss of network connectivity to various parts of campus for about 10 minutes. ISS engineers rectified the fault and are now monitoring the situation.

Fri 05 May 2006 - SPSS problem in PC Labs

Due to a technical problem, SPSS is failing on some PCs in ISS PC Labs. See Message of the Day (MOTD) for the latest info.

Wed 03 May 2006 - Brief interruption to printing service

There was a brief interruption to the charged printing service in labs and ISS Service Desk between 14:00 and 15:00 while some software was upgraded.
