Fri 30 Mar 2007 - All systems running without problems

New Virus Circulating

Due to a new virus found to be in circulation ISS are warning all users to beware of all unknown attachments. Infected 'Trojan' animated cursor files with the .ANI file extension are circulating in virused emails. ISS has blocked all .ANI files, but there have been reports indicating the Trojan can be planted in other file types.

Furness B48 ISS PC Lab Closure

The Faraday A205 ISS PC lab closed recently for the fitting of new PCs is now open.

Wed 28 Mar 2007 - Network maintenance, and Unix Mail service outage

Unix Mail service outage

There was a short outage of the Unix Mail service (Webmail, Wing and IMAP/POP3 to mail.lancs.ac.uk) due to a hardware failure. No data was lost and the problem was quickly rectified.

Exchange Email System Maintenance

Parts of the Exchange system was unavailable between 12 and 3PM, whilst system upgrades and patches were applied. Web Access was unavailable, but Outlook users and public folders were not affected.

Unrelated work on Public Folder resilience resulted in users whose mailboxes are held on the Exchange-BE4 server seeing short spells of slow response during whilst the work was carried out.

Network at Risk

Due to scheduled electrical maintenance affecting an ISS communications centre, parts of the campus network were unavailable between Midnight and 6 am. The Residences Network (ResNet) was completely unavailable between midnight and 2 am whilst the work was carried out.

Essential Maintenance - Central ISS Services

A number of central ISS services were unavailable between whilst essential electrical maintenance work was carried out in the Faraday building. Affected services included the central unix service (which was unavailable), and the central web service (which was "read only").

Electrical Shutdown overnight

The planned overnight electrical shutdown took place between 23:30 and 05:00hrs whilst electrical maintenance in No. 2 Sub Station was carried out. This work affected the buildings listed below:

  • John Creed building
  • Physics building
  • Chemistry building
  • Faraday Building
  • High Performance Computing Room

The work was successful and all is back in good running order.

County South - Power Cut

A power outage in County South caused a few problems with network connectivity in the local vicinity whilst a core network switch was replaced. All services were quickly restored.

Exchange Email System Maintenance

Exchange-BE5 was unavailable between 12 and 3PM to allow for the application of system upgrades and patches. Approximately 1/3 of BE5 Exchange users had intermittent access to email. Other users & public folders were not effected.

Tue 20 Mar 2007 - Web server problems

There were problems accessing the University web pages for about an hour at lunchtime today.

Exchange Email System Maintenance

LUVLE and My Modules Maintenance

LUVLE and My Modules were unavailable for a period between 2pm to 3pm today to allow for essential maintenance work.

Unix mailstore (Webmail/Wing) email service at risk

The Unix mailstore work planned for today was postponed until a later date.

Tue 13 Mar 2007 - All systems ran without problems

Network at Risk

Work on the core switch was carried out this morning. The work was was intended to reproduce an ongoing fault so it could be fixed in a controlled manner. Unfortunately, the fault was not reproduced so necessitating further work at a future date.

Webmail/Wing/Unix Email Service

The Unix (student) email service suffered a hardware failure causing it to become unavailable for a period of time. The services affected were Webmail, Wing, and IMAP/POP3 access to mail.lancs.ac.uk. ISS professionals restored the service by 16:10.

Graduate College PC Lab Upgrade

Graduate College ISS PC lab closed at 9am today (Thursday 8th March) and will remain closed until Friday 20th April to allow for an expansion and upgrade.
