ResNet Maintenance

During the at risk period, work was undertaken to improve the performance, security and reliability of ResNet in South West campus, Bowland Hall and campus flats. Some users were required to revalidate their computer on completion. Work began at 06:00 and was completed by 09:00.

Removal of FrontPage Software

Due to a greatly diminished demand, ISS removed Microsoft FrontPage from the Microsoft Campus Agreement scheme. Staff who still required the software were asked to contact ISS before Fri 28th July. For more information about the Campus Agreement, follow the link..

Mon 30 Jul 2007 - Temporary PC Lab Closure and Service Breaks During WiNet Upgrade

Temporary PC Lab Closure

ISS closed the Portakabin PC lab until Monday 3rd September. All other ISS PC labs remain open and in use.

Service Breaks During WiNet Upgrade

During an upgrade to the Wireless Network (WiNet) service, there will be breaks in the WiNet service. For details of the locations and dates of the WiNet service breaks, please click on 'More Information'

Network Maintenance

Power work in the Computer Centre machine room during the network 'at risk' period caused short outages to various network services between the hours of 07:00 and 09:00. The Voice Over IP (VOIP) telephone network was also considered 'at risk' for a short period between 07:00 and 07:30, although no outage occurred.

Exchange Email System Maintenance

The Exchange-BE6 server was unavailable for approximately 30 minutes,, between 13:00 and 13:30 to aid ongoing investigations into recent hardware failures.

Mon 23 Jul 2007 - IMAP Access turned off

On Monday 23rd July, ISS turned off IMAP access to Exchange Public Folders. This affects anyone using AppleMail, Mozilla Thunderbird, Outlook Express or any other IMAP client to access them. This change is necessary to protect the service against misbehaving client software.

WebMail 2.0 launched

Webmail 2.0 superceded the previous version (Webmail 1.4) today. Service was interrupted between 13:00 and 17:00 whilst the work was carried out.

LUVLE, MyModules Maintenance

LUVLE, My Modules, On-Line assessments and module feedback were unavailable from 1pm until 3pm whilst essential server maintenance work was carried out.

ISS Service Desk Opening

The ISS Service Desk on 'A' Floor of the Library has now opened. The Service Desk is the new single point of contact with ISS for all students and staff. The Staff Help Desk ('C' floor) is no longer available.

Virus Alert

ISS have received a number of emails containing fake warnings about 'worms' and ''abnormal activity from your IP address'. ISS request you ignore and delete these messages.

HPC service interruption

Due to a loss of cooling in the machine room, the HPC service was powered down to prevent overheating. All running jobs were lost, but having fixed the cooling problems, the service was brought back up and users were asked to resubmit jobs to replace those lost.

ResNet Upgrade

During the 'Network at Risk' period various ResNet systems were upgraded causing a planned loss of connectivity. However, a fault causing unplanned connectivity problems for some users was found in the Bowland Tower area. This was quickly rectified and all systems are now fully operational.

Mon 09 Jul 2007 - All systems ran without problems

The Exchange system is now fully operational, although users with mailboxes on this machine may see poor performance for several days. Users may also see pop-up messages from Outlook advising that system changes have been made and that they must exit and restart.


Fri 06 Jul 2007 - Hardware Problems

ISS systems engineers resolved the problems with Exchange-BE4 server and full service was resumed. Users with a mailbox on this server saw slightly reduced quality of service for the next few days whilst this problem was investigated and fixed.

Thu 05 Jul 2007 - Continuing Hardware Problems

ISS Systems engineers worked late in to the night on Exchange-BE4 server, which is still causing problems for approximately 500 users.

The initial assessment by external hardware engineers proved to be incorrect. ISS are now reviewing all options to fully restore the service as soon as possible.

Exchange Hardware Failure

The hardware failure reported yesterday worsened and consequently, Exchange-BE4 remained unavailable for approximately 500 users.

Central-Print 4 - Power failure

A power failure caused the the loss of Central-Print4 for a brief period. Power was quickly restored and full service is available once again.

File Server Downtime for Maintenance

The central file servers were unavailable between 1pm and 3pm for the application of security patches. This affected personal file stores (h: drive) and departmental file stores whilst the work was undertaken. All other systems ran without problems.

Exchange Hardware Failure

Exchange Hardware Failure - Exchange BE4 server was temporarily unavailable earlier in the day went on to suffer an extended hardware failure. This caused the loss of exchange access for approximately 250 users. ISS worked with our support company in an attempt to resolve the problem as soon as possible.

WiNet upgrade

WiNet Availability - a core device of WiNet was updated.

Mon 02 Jul 2007 - ISS Reception temporarily relocated

On 11th July ISS are opening the new ISS Service Desk on 'A' Floor of the Library to be a single point of contact for students and staff. It will replace the ISS Staff Help Desk, ISS Reception and ISS Student Help Desk.

Between 2nd and 10th July, the space used by ISS on 'A' Floor library is being refurbished, so ISS Reception will temporarily operate from the Library counter opposite. The ISS Student Help Desk and ResNet Workshop will be closed during this time.
