Mon 26 Nov 2007 - Incorrectly marked false Spam

On Monday morning from 9am until 12 noon, an ISS mail hub incorrectly tagged all email coming in from external sources as *ISS-Detected SPAM*. ISS advised all users to examine their 'Junk E-mail' and 'Deleted Items' folders for 'false positives'.

ISS have published webpages to instruct users on how to recover "ISS Detected Spam" tagged messages
here for Webmail users and here for Outlook Exchange users.

The key points of this incident were:

  • no email was lost or deleted by ISS's systems
  • it was only email sent from off campus to an @lancs.ac.uk or @lancaster.ac.uk address that was affected.
  • on-campus email (i.e. email between staff and students) and outgoing email were unaffected by this incident.

ISS reiterated their advice that it is good practice for users to review their email tagged as 'ISS Detected Spam@ before deleting the message.

Finally, ISS provide, and continue to provide further advice from the ISS Service Desk, either in person, via email at iss-service-deskATlancs.ac.uk or by telephone on 10987.
