Sat 26 Sep - Learning Zone Opens

The 'Learning Zone opened at 9am on Saturday 26th September 2009.

The University 'Learning Zone' is centrally located on Alexandra Square and provides relaxed surroundings for staff and students. The Learning Zone provides a variety of working environments including group work PODs. Facilities include Apple Macintosh computers, colour printers, interactive white boards, data projectors and a WiFi HotZone. A laptop loan service is provided by the ISS Service Desk.


Fri 25 Sep - Network outages

Network outages were experienced in the George Fox building and environs. This was due to a power cable being severed. Normal service was resumed in a speedy, yet most professional manner.

Thu 24 Sep - High Performance Cluster service failure

The HPC service was unavailable following a cooling failure in the machine room. The execution nodes were powered down and all running jobs were lost. Job submissions were then sent to a queue whilst the problem was sorted and full service restored.

LUVLE was temporarily unavailable for the application of security updates, between 3pm and 5pm.

The Exchange email system was unavailable between 1pm and 4pm on September 2009 while security updates were applied. Users saw brief interruptions to service during this period.

Over the weekend there was a power outrage in the County and Faraday area.

The generator powering the High Performance Cluster was switched off for essential maintenance over the weekend (12th/13th September.)

Wed 09 Sep - Groupman Problems & Network at Risk - ResNet Core Switch Firmware Upgrades

Groupman Problems

An issue with the ACME server caused Groupman requests to be queued. Queued requests were carried out once the issue had been resolved and normal service restored.

ResNet Core Switch Firmware Upgrades

The upgrade to the ResNet core switch firmware was carried out with minimal disruption to service. The upgrade adds Multicast functionality to the ResNet network, which will be monitored over the next few days to ensure that no problems arise.

Tue 08 Sep - Network Outage at Lancaster House Hotel Conference Centre: Resolved

Service has now been restored.

Mon 07 Sep - Network Outage at Lancaster House Hotel Conference Centre

Contractors at Grizedale have damaged network cables feeding the hotel conference centre. A fix is being arranged but the outage is likely to be prolonged.


Fri 04 Sep - Adobe Reader Problem Resolved

It was found that the recent upgrade of Adobe Reader (to v9.1.3) caused problems in certain configurations of Managed XP PCs when opening PDF files within a web browser. A modified Adobe Reader 'package' which fixes this issue has been released by ISS which will be installed the next time users reboot their machine.

Users of the Acrobat Standard (writer) suite on the Managed XP PC may (or may not) have an issue as a result of this second Adobe Reader upgrade. If you problems with using Acrobat Standard contact the ISS Service Desk on x10987.

Thu 03 Sep - Adobe Reader Problem

An issue with Adobe Acrobat 9.1.3 was identified.
