Q. How do I login to Live@edu?
Visit the webmail page http://webmail.lancs.ac.uk
This is controlled by CoSign and you should use your standard University IT account credentials to login.
Additionally you can access your email using a standard email program using IMAP.
Q. Can I login to a hotmail account at the same time as logging into Live@edu?
No Microsoft do not allow you to log in 2 both email systems at the same time. However, you can use InPrivate Browsing in IE or Incognito in Google Chrome to get around this problem.
1) Open Live@edu in a normal window.
2) Then click on Safety then "In Private Browsing" ( use the Ctrl+Shift+P shortcut key)
3) Then navigate to hotmail. In the "In Private Browsing" mode the 2nd browser won't know what the first browser is doing.

Alternatively, are using Windows 7, all you have to do is right-click on the icon in the taskbar and choose the InPrivate option. You can also click and hold the left mouse button on the icon, and slide your mouse up… the menu will pop up and you can choose it there.

Q. What will happen the first time I login?
On login you will be able to set an appropriate time zone for your location and choose which language you would like Outlook live to display menus in. All new emails will be delivered to this inbox
See Live@edu mobile devices webpage for more information
Yes, live@edu offers integration with iPhones, Android phones and devices running Windows Mobile (5.2 and above) or any client that supports ActiveSync or IMAP but not POP as this has been disabled. ActiveSync is preferred offering the richest features and push mail. You can obtain the settings from the live@edu web page - by choosing Options > See All Options > Settings for POP, IMAP and SMTP access

The University will continue to scan external email for spam and for viruses and will tag spam as now before passing messages into your live@edu mailbox. In addition Microsoft content filtering at live@edu will provide additional checks. You will be able to setup rules on your inbox and live@edu also provides a Junk E-mail folder.
If you delete your emails they can be recovered from your “Deleted Items” folder. Once you have emptied your “Deleted Items” folder you can then recover your emails for a further 30 days (after this your
emails are not recoverable). In order to recover items that have been deleted from Deleted Items right click the "Deleted Items" folder and choose Recover Deleted Items.
Your Live@edu email is not backed up by Lancaster University and no mechanisms are available to ISS Support Staff to recover lost or deleted information. However, the Microsoft Live@edu Service does provide you with mechanisms to recover messages yourself for a given period after deletion. Even so, it is recommended that you do not use this service for the storage or backing up of important documents. You should always use your personal file store (H: Drive) to store important documents, as this is backed up by ISS every night.
Q. What browers are supported on Live@edu?
Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista, or Windows 7:

If a browser is detected that isn't supported for the full feature set Live@edu will open in the light interface. The light version provides fewer features and is faster for some operations. You may want to use the light version if you're on a slow connection or using a computer with unusually strict browser security settings. The light version can be used with almost any browser and has the same features across all browsers.

Q.How do I change how my messages are displayed ?
Outlook Web App includes a new feature called "Conversation view" which groups messages between two parties so you can follow a mail message conversation.
This is not to everyone's taste and the view can be changed in the options. You can also change the sort order of messages and the handling of read items.
Options > See All Options

Please note however, data saved in other Windows Live Services such as SkyDrive, Instant Messenger and Office Live is stored in “the cloud” and is subject to Microsoft standard terms and conditions . This means that your data could be stored on servers anywhere in the world and as a result not subject to EU Data Protection law. For this reason we strongly advise you do not store any sensitive, restricted or confidential data in the Windows Live Services but store your data on the Lancaster managed file store (H: drive)

Any failures will be reported to the Windows Live support desk by the ISS Service Desk where it will be escalated as a priority support incident.
