MATLAB is a package for matrix algebra and many other numerical applications.
MATLAB runs on campus PCs, Macs, the High End Computing cluster and on your home PC/Mac via VPN. To pick up a University license you must must be connected to CENT 1 (IUS - Interactive UNIX Service).
General Information :
- The latest version of MATLAB is R2012a.
- The MATLAB licence allows staff and students to use the software only whilst connected to the campus network (including ResNet, VPN and WiNet).
- MATLAB is available for Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 (recommended) and Mac OS X (Snow Leopard and Lion).
A Linux version is available but is not supported by ISS. - | MATLAB Toolbox Availability | - MATLAB has a number of 'Toolboxes'. Follow the link for a full list of licenced MATLAB Toolboxes and a 'live' availability status display.
Help :
- Manuals for MATLAB are available in the Library.
- The software has an inbuilt help system.
- The MathWorks provide a wealth of on-line information about MATLAB and SIMULINK.
- For problems with installing the software (including licensing issues), contact the ISS Service Desk.
MATLAB
To install MATLAB (current version R2012a), you need to complete three stages:
- create an account for yourself on the the MathWorks site and add the MATLAB licence to your MathWorks account.
If you intend to download MATLAB - email a request to the ISS Service Desk to have 'MATLAB downloads' authorized. - Either a) download MATLAB from the MathWorks site.
Or b) borrow a MATLAB DVD from the Library (you still need to create the MathWorks account). - Install MATLAB.
Stage 1. Create MathWorks Account
- visit the: MathWorks Login Page.
- Either:
- click on 'Create an Account' link and create a new account (see below) with your Lancaster email address.
- or - Login (with your @lancaster email address and your MathWorks account password). - If you are creating a new account:
- Tip 1 - Enter your @Lancaster.ac.uk email address (Note - NOT @lancs.ac.uk).
- Tip 2 - add yourself as an 'Academic use (including campus/site use)' NOT 'Student use...'
- a email will be sent for you confirm - Tip 3 - the confirmation email may end up in your 'Junk mail' folder.
- click on the confirmation link (OR copy the address link into your web browser).
- click 'Continue' button on web page - see MathWorks main page with your name as a user at top right.
- click on 'My Account' option (next to your name) - see MathWorks Account as below:

- click on 'Associate with a licence' button - see 'Licence Center' dialog

- click on the 'Add Licence' button - see

- click on 'Activation Key' option, then click 'Continue' button - see Activation key input box.

- go to: Matlab License Codes (Activation Keys).
- highlight the 25-digit Activation Key for the appropriate version of MATLAB.
- press: Ctrl & C to copy it.
- return to MathWorks.
- click into the Activation key box then, press: Ctrl & V to paste the Activation key into the box.
- click on the 'Continue' button - see 'Association Complete' message.
- click on the 'Done' button - see list of MATLAB licenced products.
Note - In order to download you need 'MATLAB downloading' to be authorized by ISS. Use the same Lancaster email account that you used to log onto to MathWorks to send an email message to ISS Service Desk to request 'MATLAB Downloading' to be authorized.
On receipt of a 'MATLAB Download Authorization Done' message, procede as below:
Stage 2. Download/Borrow MATLAB
Either borrow Matlab from the Library or:
- continue from above, or logon again to the MathWorks Download site.
- click on the 'Download button'
- choose 'R2011b', 'Windows' or 'Mac', '32-bit' or '64-bit'.
- ensure 'Download the current versions of all my products for the platform(s) selected.' is selected', then click 'Continue' button.
- click on the 'save' button, if your browser requests confirmation, do so.
- click on the downloaded file and run it - see MathWorks download dialog.
- click 'Next' button, then click the 'Download' button - see download progress bars.
- wait...
Stage 3. Installing MATLAB
Note - the illustrations below were 'grabbed' from a MATLAB R2011a install on a Windows PC. The screens for the current version of MATLAB on a Windows PC and on a Mac will look slightly different but are functionally identical.
- click 'Finish' button to run the 'installer' .

OR insert the DVD and run the DVD)
If the DVD does not run automatically, open the DVD window and:
PC: double click on 'Setup.exe'.
Mac: open the Matalab folder then double click on 'InstallForMacOSX'. - wait... - see the 'MathWorks Installer' dialog.
- ensure the 'Install using the Internet' option is selected.
- click 'Next' then enter your MathsWorks account details or create a new mathworks account (email and password).
- click on the 'Next' button - see the Licence Agreement' dialog.
- click on the 'Yes' option to accept the terms of the license agreement.
- Download Installers skip to next dialog.
DVD Installers - see dialog as below. - click 'Next' button - see 'Licence Selection' dialog.
- You should see the following licence listed as:
82987 Concurrent - Network Concurrent User
If you do not see the license listed you will need to enter an activation key. Licence and activation codes are located at Licence updates - click on the 'Next' button - see the 'Type Dialog'.
- ensure that 'Typical' is selected as your installation type.
- click 'Next' button - see
- accept the default path to your destination
PC folder: C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2010b
Mac folder: /Applications - before continuing the install procedure, create a licence file by doing the following:
- PC - Open notepad Mac - Open TextEdit
- PC & Mac: enter the following information:
SERVER lmgr-matlab.lancs.ac.uk ANY 1203
USE_SERVER - PC (a) - Save the file as C:\users\(your username)\licence.lic e.g. C:\users\bloggsj\licence.lic
PC (b) - Note - when saving, you need to put double quote marks round the filename i.e. "licence.lic"
Mac (i) - click on the 'Format' menu then 'Make Plain Text' option. Mac (ii) - click 'file' menu then 'save' option.
Mac (iii) - unselect the 'If no extension is provided, use .txt' option.
