Scanning Disks For Viruses
Getting Started
- click 'Start' button, then 'Programs', then 'Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition', then 'Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition' (again!).
Scanning a Floppy Disk
- put the floppy disk in drive A:
- click on the 'Scan' menu, then the 'Scan a Floppy' option.
- click on the 'Scan' button - see disk scanned.
- when the scan is 'completed' click on the x button to close the dialog.
Scanning a Memory Stick
- put the memory stick in a USB socket.
- click on the 'Scan computer' option, then click on the 'Scan Removable Disk' option - see tick in box.
- click on the 'Scan' button - see memory stick scanned.
- when the scan is 'completed' click on the x button to close the dialog.
Scanning Your Hard Disk(s)
Switching on the Spyware Scan Feature
Symantec AntiVirus v10.1 is capable of scanning for some Spyware (as well as viruses). To activate the anti-spyware feature:
- click on the 'Scan' menu then the 'Scan Computer' option.
- click on the 'Options' button - see a dialog.
- ensure that the 'Scan for in-memory threats' option
- ensure thee 'Scan for expanded threats' option are selected - see 'Enable Security Risk' dialog pop-up.
- click 'Close' button then click OK.
All future scans will search for Spyware as well viruses, but the spyware search is not a full search - to properly deal with spyware you need an AntiSpyware program such as Microsoft AntiSpyware. Scanning Disks
Performing scans:
- click on the 'Scan Computer' option on the left - see a list of disks.
- click on the disk(s) you wish to scan - see ticks in the boxes next to the disks.
- click on the 'Scan' button - see disk(s) scanned.
- when the scan is 'completed' click on the x button to close the dialog.
Files infected with Viruses will be automatically cleaned off your disk where possible. If cleansing is not possible the file will be moved to a 'quarantine area' on your disk to ensure further infection does not take place.
Scanning Folders
- click on the 'Scan Computer' option on the left - see a list of disks.
- click on the + sign to expand the disk - see a list of folders.
- click on the + sign next to the folder containing the folder you want to scan.
- repeat until the folder you want to scan is located.
- click on the box to put a tick in it - see a tick in the box next to the folder.
- click on the 'Scan' button - see folder scanned.
- when the scan is 'completed' click on the x button to close the dialog.
Scanning Network Disk/Folders
You will probably only have rights to scan part of the network disk, so you will need to select that area.
- click on the 'Scan Computer' option on the left - see a list of disks.
- click on the + sign next to the network disk - see a list of folders.
- click on the + sign next to the folder containing the folder you want to scan.
- repeat until the folder you want to scan is located.
- click on the box to put a tick in it - see a tick in the box next to the folder.
- click on the 'Scan' button - see folder scanned.
- when the scan is 'completed' click on the x button to close the dialog.
