About Virus Definitions

New threats 'emerge' all the time. The security companies (including Symantec) work out what is happening and write a detection and repair routines to clean the threat off the computer. Symantec call the detection & repair routines a 'virus definitions'. Every week the anti-virus companies distribute a new set of virus definitions. To avoid infection by new viruses you need to update your 'virus definitions' at least once a week.

Checking Your Virus Definitions

Symantec Endpoint Protection displays the date of the current virus definitions in the middle of the main dialog.

  1. right click on the Symantec Endpoint Protection icon in the system tray.
  2. click on 'Open Symantec Endpoint Protection' option.
  3. see date of current virus definitions in the middle of the dialog - if they are more than a month old update them.

Updating Virus Definitions

How you update Virus Definitions depends on where and how you installed Symantec Endpoint Protection:

Location Media Instructions
On-campus Staff
& PC Labs
Network the 'virus definitions' are updated automatically.
Student Residences Internet the 'virus definitions' are updated automatically from Symantec's website.
Off Campus Internet
or by disk
run Symantec AntiVirus & click 'LiveUpdate' weekly.
Anywhere Stand Alone get a CD from ISS Service Desk or see Download Virus Definitions.
