Installing SEP 12 from the Network

If you do NOT have a network connection (see What You NEED section below) you can install SEP 12 from CD.

There are 32bit and 64bit versions of SEP available to install from the network. If you are uncertain which version is applicable to you, choose the 32bit option. If you choose the wrong version the install process fails 'gracefully' without doing any damage.

What You NEED:

• a network connection:
• ResNet - good.
• WiNet - will work subject to the wireless connection providing enough 'bandwidth'.
• VPN - will work subject to your ISP connection providing enough 'bandwidth'.
• ISP - DO NOT use this install - if you connecting from home without using VPN it will NOT work. You can pick up a CD from the ISS Service Desk in the Learning Zone.
• Managed XP/Supported 7 PCs - DO NOT use this install - SEP 12 will be automatically installed during the Christmas 2012 vacation or early in 2013.

• Ensure you logon as a user with 'Admin' rights.
• You must have at least 80 Mbytes of Hard Disk free to install, and 50Mbytes of Hard Disk free to run.
• before proceeding, backup your data that resides on your hard disk.
• Important Note - uninstall ALL existing anti-virus software.

Installing Symantec Endpoint Protection 12

Un-install any existing Symantec AntiVirus or any other anti-virus product, including Internet security packages such as Norton Internet Security.

1. Windows 7 - click 'Start' button - see 'Search programs and files' box.
   Windows 8 - press Windows key and R - see Run dialog.
2. type or copy and paste the below into the 'Search.../Open' box:
   \\data\software$\Site\AntiVirus\Symantec\12.1.2\NonUniversity-PC\
3. Windows 8 - Enter your username: lancs\(University username) and password in then click OK - see
4. if you cannot see Mac, x64, x86' - check your spelling e.g. slashes are backslashes
   - if you have a 64bit PC - click on 'x64' - see 'setup(.exe)'.
   - if you have a 32bit PC - click on 'x86' - see 'setup(.exe)'.
   - if you have a Mac - click on 'Mac'* - see 'Symantec Endpoint Protection(.zip)' *Mac instructions are incomplete at present.
   
5. double click on 'Setup(.exe)'
6. if required - in the 'User Access Control' box enter your username in the form: lancs\(username) e.g. lancs\bloggsj and your password below.
7. click on the 'Yes' button confirm that you do want to allow "...changes to the computer?" to be made - see Symantec Endpoint Protect install progress bar - the install could take about ten minutes.
8. if necessary - click 'Close' button on a 'LiveUpdate Status' dialog.
9. You will see a request to reboot - close all programs and click on the 'Restart' button.
10. when you system restarts, SEP 12 will be fully installed and working.

Updating Virus Definitions

Your installation of Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 is only as good as your last Virus Definition Update. Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 has the latest virus definition 'pushed' automatically onto the PC from a central server. No intervention is required by users of network Installed PCs.
