Current Versions

Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 is the current ISS workstation anti-virus solution for Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP. Symantec Endpoint Protection comes in 32bit and 64bit versions.

Functionality

Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 (SEP12) will check for viruses, Trojans and othe malware on all: 'program starts', 'document opens', 'file copies/moves/opens' and 'email opens/sends'. If a peice of malware is found it is either cleaned, deleted or quarantined. In addition to the the 'guard' facility that runs all the time, the hard disk can be specifically searched (scanned) for malware - any malware found will be cleaned deleted or quarantined. However some viruses become undeleteble and further action is required. If a virus is 'left alone' or is detected again on a second scan (having apparently been dealt with on the first scan) you will need to call the ISS Service Desk who will send a technician to disinfect the PC.

SEP has anti-spyware capability.

Symantec Anti-Malware Site Licence

Lancaster University has a site licence for Symantec Endpoint Protection Corporate Edition. This means that everyone has free access to one of the best anti-virus programs around. Symantec Endpoint Protection prevents PCs from being infected with known viruses.
