Lancaster University ISS - Connecting to the VPN from linux

Tested and works in Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy) and SuSE 10.

You need the programs "pptp-linux" and "pptpconfig" (check the repositories, or do a web search to find them). Once both are installed, run pptpconfig as root (or with sudo).

Fill in the following information:

  • Server
    • Name: Lancaster University VPN
    • Server: vpn.lancs.ac.uk
    • Domain: (leave blank)
    • User name: <your user name>
    • Password: <your password>
  • Routing
    • Tick the "All to Tunnel" box
  • DNS
    • Tick the "Automatic" box and leave the rest blank
  • Encryption
    • Tick the following:
    • Require Microsoft Point-to-Point encryption
    • Refuse 40-bit encryption
    • Refuse Stateless encryption
    • Refuse to Authenticate with EAP

The Miscellaneous tab settings should be left blank.

When all this is done, click the Add button and a new entry will appear in the Tunnel List window. To connect, click on this entry, then click the Start button, and you will be connected.

In order to browse the web, you'll need to change the cache in your browser. In Firefox, click on Preferences in the Edit menu. Under the General heading, choose Connection Settings. Select Automatic Proxy Configuration URL, and enter http://wwwcache.lancs.ac.uk. Once that's done you should have access to all the web sites which are normally unavailable outside the university network (e.g. JSTOR etc.)

When you turn off the VPN (using the Stop button in pptpconfig) you'll need to return the Firefox proxy to its normal setting.

To set up a connection to your H:\ drive

Note: This will only work while the VPN is active

  • Start a network connection (this will be different, depending on the version of Linux, but might be "Connect to server..." in GNOME or "Add a network folder" in KDE)
  • Choose Microsoft Windows Network Drive.
  • Fill in the boxes:
    • Name: H:\
    • Server homesX.lancs.ac.uk (where X is the number of the server your folder is on.)
      • Dirs 00-19 connect to homes1
      • Dirs 20-39 connect to homes2
      • Dirs 40-60 connect to homes3
    • Folder: YY/<username> (Where YY is the folder number (make sure you put the slash the right way round -- this is Linux!))
When prompted for username and password enter
Username: lancs\<user name> (yes, that is a backslash!)
Password: <password>

A new window will open with your remote folder in it. (You may be prompted for user name and password again. Enter the same as above). You're now connected.
