The Interactive UNIX ServiceThe University's Interactive Unix Service (IUS) provides a UNIX facility for students and departments whose needs, in the areas of study, research, development and teaching, are not best served by the University's MS-Windows-based services. The IUS also acts as a front-end to the other UNIX-based services the University provides. Hardware and Operating systemThe IUS comprises a cluster of three SUN machines along with a common fileserver. The operating system is Solaris 7. SoftwareA wide range of software is installed on the system. Electronic mailThere is a web front end to the UNIX-hosted email service, Webmail. It is also possible to access email by logging into the IUS - for instructions on how to do this see Using Unix for Email. WebspaceYour web directory will be created in /home/www/YOUR DIRECTORY NUMBER/YOUR USERNAME/public_html/. You can also use the environment variable $WWWHOME/public_html/ to access it. Depending on the way systems administrators set them up this may also work on other unix machines e.g. bromo. If not, you will need to use FTP or scp. FTP instructions are available on http://www.lancs.ac.uk/iss/ftp/ - connect to www.lancs.ac.uk HelpAnswers to the most common Frequently Asked Questions are
