How can I check my email on unix from home?

Telnet to unix.lancs.ac.uk and log in as normal when prompted for your username or password

Elm is already reading my mailbox. How do I remove the temporary file?

Type setup_homegrown at the % prompt.
Type rmelm at the % prompt and follow the instructions

My email has disappeared

It may have been moved to the received folder. In elm or mutt enter the inbox then type c and =received to go to the received folder.

I get over quota messages when I log on to unix but I haven't got very many emails

It is not always emails that use up your quota. See the quota page.
