Windows Update  

Microsoft regularly issue updates/patches to fix bugs and plug 'security holes' in Windows. The security holes are used by worms, viruses and hackers to compromise your system.

Note - Managed XP PCs - are updated with Microsoft patches automatically (click on the link to check yours).

It is vital to keep Windows up-to-date with patches.

Microsoft Windows Update

Recently virus attacks have almost brought the University network to a complete halt. It is VITALLY IMPORTANT that all (unmanaged) Windows PCs are kept up-to-date with patches. Fortunately you can update Windows 'online' by following a simple procedure.

How long will it take?

The first time you do the procedure, it may take a 'long time'. Do not be put off - this is IMPORTANT.

How often do I need to update Windows?

Once you have updated your copy of Windows you MUST repeat the update procedure at least once per month. The 'monthly' updates will be quick and easy.

Updating Windows

To update Windows over the Internet either:

  1. click on the Windows Update bubble (or small icon).
  2. Windows Update Bubble

  3. follow instructions.

Or...

  1. ensure that you an 'administrator' on your PC (Win XP/2000/NT4)- most users should be administrators on their own PCs.
  2. run Internet Explorer.
  3. Windows Update Drop Menu

  4. click on the 'Tools' menu, then the 'Windows Update' option*.
    *If you don't have the 'Windows Update' option visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.
  5. see 'Microsoft checking your system' screen.
  6. if you are asked to download a module - click 'Yes' button.
  7. if you are asked, then click 'Install Now' button.
  8. click on your version of Windows for continued instructions...
    Windows XP    Windows 2000/98    Windows NT4/ME

Continued instructions for Windows XP Home Edition and Professional...

  1. click on 'Express' option.
  2. wait...
  3. if asked - click 'Download and Install' button.
  4. wait...
  5. read and agree to any 'End user licence agreements' (EULAs).
  6. When finished, click 'Restart Now' button.
  7. when rebooted - restart 'Windows Update' procedure - some updates need to be installed on their own and so you may have install more udpates.
  8. users of Microsoft Office may be asked to update Office from a Microsoft Office update page - follow that through. Note you may be asked to insert your original Office installation CD.
    Students:
    • If you have the original CD to hand - insert the CD as requested.
    • If you NOT have your orginal CD, cancel the update, get the CD (from home or where-ever) and restart the Windows Update.
    • If you cannot locate the CD - cancel the Windows Update. You will be at increased risk of infection.
    Staff:
    • Contact the ISS Service Desk.
  9. reboot when asked.
  10. repeat the 'Windows Update', 'Custom Install', 'Review Other Updates' option until all updates (except XP SP2) are complete.

Continued instructions for Windows 2000/98...

  1. click on 'Scan for updates' option;
    or (after 'Update Rollup 1', July 2005), click on the 'Express' button - see screen determining updates.
  2. click on 'Review and install updates' option
    or (after 'Update Rollup 1') click on 'Install Updates' button - see list of updates.
  3. click on the 'Install Now' button.
    Note - some updates, notably 'Service Packs', require installing seperately - after installing one of these, you will need to return to the Windows Update website and repeat the process.

You can review the other updates on offer, but all updates, take time to install, use space on your hard disk and may cause problems - only install the enhancements you need.

If any of the the update(s) fail, ring the ISS Service Desk on x10987.

Continued instructions for Windows NT4/ME...

  1. click on 'Product Updates' button - see screen determining updates.
  2. scroll down and click on 'Show Individual Updates' option - see list of updates.
  3. click on 'Download' button.
    Note - some updates, notably 'Service Packs', require installing seperately - after installing one of these, you will need to return to the Windows Udpate website and repeat the process.
  4. click on the 'Start Download' button.
  5. follow the instructions - agreeing to the licence agreements.
  6. wait while patches install... - most patches require a reboot of your system.
  7. IMPORTANT - repeat the above instructions until all 'critical updates' are installed.

You can review the other updates on offer, but all updates, take time to install, use space on your hard disk and may cause problems - only install the enhancements you need.

If any of the the update(s) fail, ring the ISS Service Desk on x10987.

ISS Warning Screen 

When Windows XP Pro PCs logon they are checked by ISS software to see if they have various vital Windows Service Packs & security patches installed.

If the system is found not to be up-to-date with the vital security patches, the following dialog is displayed:

If you see this dialog - you are directed to this page! Follow the instructions above and update your copy of Windows. If you have a problem with the instructions contact the ISS Service Desk on x10987 or contact ISS Service Desk in the Learning Zone.
