The new QS World University Rankings 2024 has placed Lancaster’s Linguistics Department as the third best Linguistics department in the world.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) remains in first place, while Cambridge University just pipped Lancaster to second place by a slender margin of 0.2.

Professor Jonathan Culpeper, the Head of the Department of Linguistics and English Language, said: "Our department benefits from the interdisciplinary ethos, willingness to engage with real-world issues and collaborative spirit that characterises Lancaster University. Above all, this result is testament to the creativity and sheer hard work of my colleagues. All this adds up to a department producing innovative research that makes a difference, and that draws attention from students and researchers from around the world."

Detailed analysis of the results also shows that Lancaster comes second for academic reputation, after MIT.
