Exhibition
"1001 Inventions Touring Exhibition begins at
Thinktank, Birmingham"
Place:
Thinktank, Birmingham, UK
Description:
The landmark exhibition began its UK-wide tour at the Museum of Science and
Industry in Manchester and soon will be coming to a city near you.
Designed by Haley Sharpe (UK),
this unique content of the exhibition has been planned to generate awareness
and appreciation of the scientific discoveries Muslims have made over a
time-span of 1000 years. The lasting legacy of Muslim inventiveness and
scholarship still serves as a beacon to inspire and motivate young people
around the world.
The 1001 Inventions project strongly emphasises how Muslims, working
harmoniously alongside people of different faiths and races across Europe,
Asia and Africa, were able to contribute extensively in many fields including
science and medicine.

About MuslimHeritage.com*

www.muslimheritage.com)
Prince Charles, Heir to the British Monarchy
in a recent public speech at Oxford University stated:
"If there is much misunderstanding in the West about the nature of Islam,
there is also much ignorance about the debt our own culture and civilisation
owe to the Islamic world. It is a failure, which stems, I think, from the
straight-jacket of history, which we have inherited. The medieval Islamic
world, from central Asia to the shores of the Atlantic, was a world where
scholars and men of learning flourished. But because we have tended to see
Islam as the enemy of the West, as an alien culture, society, and system of
belief, we have tended to ignore or erase its great relevance to our own
history."

About MuslimHeritage.com

Heritage and its mostly unaccounted contribution to current world
civilisation...

Lancaster Climate Action presents...

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY
How Cuba Survived Peak Oil
With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990, almost overnight Cuba’s oil
supplies dropped form 30 million tonnes to just 4 million tonnes.
Over the next 10 years, Cuba was forced to adapt to this change. This
documentary in particular focuses on the changes in Cuban food production,
which is one of the main users of oil supplies.
The film will be followed by an informal discussion about peak oil, climate
change and how we can prepare locally.

Seminar
"Human Rights in Contemporary US Foreign and Security Policy:
Consistencies and Inconsistencies"
Time: 2-4pm
Place: Bowland North Small Lecture Theatre
Organizer: Lancaster Human Rights Forum and the
Dept. of Politics and IR
Introduced by Jan Hancock, Centre for International Politics,
University of
Manchester
This paper details the consistencies and inconsistencies in the human rights
claims of post 9/11 foreign and security policy made by the George W. Bush
administrations. The contributions and limitations of two common
explanations of this narrative are evaluated; (i) that human rights can, at
some times and in some circumstances but not others, constitute a foreign
policy goal and; (ii) that the human rights claims of policymakers can be
dismissed as hypocritical rhetoric since policy practice fails to meet the
necessary conditions for human rights. This paper contributes to this debate
by applying the works of early twentieth century political culture theorists
to identify a consistent application of human rights claims as a technique
of governance. By charting the production of an ethical narrative as a
function of social power, the article details how language has been
consistently employed to inculcate, rather than reflect, reality.

Film: "The Iron wall"
Time: 6pm
Place: Furness LT3, Lancaster University
Description:
The Iron Wall: The hard-hitting film provides an
excellent introduction to the situation in
Palestine.
With guest speakers from; War on Want and Jews for Justice for Palestinians.
All welcome
www.waronwant.org
About the Film:
During 2005, The Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committees (PARC) and Smart
Frame productions produced a 60 minute documentary film "The Iron Wall"
covering the history of the Israeli settlements in the Palestinian Occupied
Territories, their locations, population and infrastructure including the road
network and finally the construction of the wall, built to protect the
settlements and to annex them to the state of Israel.
The film exposes the creation of illegal Israeli settlements on Palestinian
land, as intrinsic to Israeli government policy and their devastating
effect on Palestinian people. The film also explores
the issue of the separation
wall that Israel is building in the West Bank. This
is the Israeli governments' latest
project to secure the settlements as permanent facts on the ground, and make
life for ordinary Palestinian families even more unbearable.
The powerful documentary features interviews with prominent Israeli and
Palestinian peace activists and political analysts, including: Jeff Halper,
Akiva Eldar, Hind Khoury and Ghassan Al-Khatib, as well as Israeli
settlers and soldiers and Palestinian farmers.
The director, Mohammed Alatar, is a long time peace activist and the
founder of Palestinians for Peace and Democracy. The
film is produced by PARC, a
non-governmental organization working with Palestinian farmers, providing
technical, financial and moral support.
