building & refurbishment work...

The Residences Project is a phased programme of new buildings and replacement of older stock. Phases one and two comprised 2000 new rooms on Alexandra Park, home to Cartmel, Lonsdale and Graduate Colleges, as well as half of Pendle College.

Phase Three involved demolition and reconstruction of accommodation on the main campus for Furness, Fylde and County Colleges, and this opened in September 2006. All of phases 1-3 involved provision of new Superior Ensuite rooms in flats of around 8 each.

Phase Four, centred on Grizedale and County Colleges, involving a different kind of construction based around green principles. The timber framed buildings are felled from sustainable forests, and the design and building process has low carbon intensity.

The actual buildings contain the latest twist on our en-suite cluster flats, some family flats and some set up as student 'townhouses' complete with living areas. County's iconic Main building has also been refurbished as Superior Standard accommodation, with all opening to residents in 2008.

The remainder of the residential estate is undergoing a refurbishment over the next few years, though this will mainly be outside tenancy periods.

Full refurbishment of the original Graduate College residences, all of Chancellor's Wharf, Furness Perimeter Residences, Bowland's Main building and Slaidburn House, and Pendle College's residences have all been completed since 2010.

development in 2013

Lent and Summer 2013 will see the programme continue with a full refit of Bowland Tower, and the restoration of the residential wings around Alexandra Square.

Aside from the residences there will be other building work ongoing on campus to improve teaching and learning facilities on offer at Lancaster. Prospective students should be aware that there may be some disruption. You can view details on the Facilities Projects web page.

Whilst every effort will be taken to keep noise and disruption to a minimum, students applying for accommodation should be aware that some disturbance is inevitable, and that the building work will be noisy at times. Construction work hours are normally Monday-Friday 08:00-18:00 and Saturday 08:00-12:00. Saturday afternoon and Sunday work is not normally expected.
