accommodation guide...

If you choose to live on campus the type of accommodation available will be a key factor in determining which college you apply for, and you should choose one that best represents both your collegiate and residential requirements. The following profiles list the options available to you, their locations and the weekly rent.

Standard with washbasin

Bowland's Basic Standard rooms sit in the oldest and northernmost part of campus, with kitchens and facilities shared between around 15 people. The rooms in Bowland Annexe attract a lower weekly rent of £82.25 per week in 2013/14, reflecting the age and provision on offer. The let length is a typical 40 weeks.

The remaining Standard rooms with washbasins have all been refurbished between 2010 and 2012, and attract a weekly rent of £96.60 over 40 weeks in 2013/14. They are located in Grizedale and Pendle colleges (built in 1994), where eight rooms share a kitchen, two shower rooms and two WCs; Furness Perimeter (built in 1992) with 4-6 students sharing kitchen and bathroom facilities; and Bowland Main, where around ten share kitchen and bathroom facilities.

County College's striking main building re-opened in September 2008 following a major refurbishment, providing high-spec Superior Standard rooms with washbasins in slightly larger cluster flats, incorporating lounge areas with sofas where residents can relax. 8-13 students share lounge, kitchen and bathroom facilities. The 40 week lets attract a weekly rent of £101.50 in 2013/14.

Townhouses

The new townhouse developments are based in Grizedale and County Colleges, and 12 people share each house. Brand new for 2008, each house contains a kitchen/diner, living area with sofas, downstairs WC and a shower room at the ratio of one per two rooms. The lease on these is for 43 weeks. Weekly rent for 2013/14 is £101.50 plus £6.23 utility charge.

Ensuite

Around 65% of our accommodation is en-suite, and most of this has opened since 2004. Lonsdale and Cartmel Colleges offer entirely Superior Ensuite accommodation. Furness, Fylde, County, Grizedale and Pendle also have large quantities of superior ensuite rooms in their portfolios. All offer 40 week lets, and a weekly rent of £117.95 for 2013/14 . There are also a handful of larger rooms in Cartmel, Lonsdale, County and Fylde, costing £125.65 per week.

The older ensuite residences on campus attract a lower rent to reflect the date of the buildings. Bowland Hall, County's John Creed Building and Fylde's George Fox Building offer Basic Ensuite rooms at a rate of £106.40 per week over 40 weeks (John Creed also offers 36 week lets).

Bowland's Slaidburn House was refurbished in 2011, thus attracting the slightly higher rate of £114.45 in 2013/14.

Self-contained Studios

Pendle and Grizedale Colleges each offer 72 self contained studios. Most are single occupancy though there are a handful of twin studios in each block. Larger than an en-suite room, each has a small kitchenette, table and chairs and a 3/4/ size bed. As there are no communal areas in these buildings they are better suited to continuing students that have already formed friendship groups. Freshers are advised to consider carefully before applying. For 2013/14 single studios are £140.35 per week, with twins £157.50.

Catered Accommodation

We offer a catered package in parts of Bowland County, Cartmel and Lonsdale Colleges, consisting of breakfast and dinner daily during termtime. All students on the scheme are housed together. There is a dining facility at each end of the campus, open to students on the scheme as well as the general public. Full details of the scheme can be found via this link to the Catered Accommodation page .

Weekly rents are as follows: Basic Standard (Bowland) £122.08 for 40 weeks; Basic Ensuite (County) £151.90 for 36 weeks; Superior Ensuite (Cartmel, County & Lonsdale) £157.78 for 40 weeks.

Please note that catering is provided for only 31 weeks - the full ten weeks of each term, plus Freshers' Week.

Services and Provisions

Full details of what we provide and what you should bring with you can be found in our Residents' Handbook. You can download it here, and a hard copy will be provided in your room on arrival for your reference through the year.

Rent

Your rent is payable termly in advance, by credit/debit card online. If you encounter difficulties, you must discuss these with your Residence Officer in person and in advance.

The let length on most rooms is 40 weeks, giving you the advantage of not having to move your belongings out during the vacations. Shorter let areas on campus are used to house conference visitors during vacations and you would need to clear your room during these times.

Services

If you live in University managed accommodation your residence charges are inclusive of heating, lighting, electricity, and a 24-hour security presence during term time. ResNet is also included, giving you access to the University network and high speed Internet.

An insurance premium is built into the rent, covering your possessions up to the value of £4,500. You may wish to increase cover on certain items as you see necessary. More details can be found in the Residents' Handbook, and on the Cover4Students website.

A basic cleaning service is included for all shared areas such as kitchens and corridors, though you are responsible for keeping your own room clean. There is no cleaning service available in the studio apartments, family flats and townhouses. More details can be found in the Residents' Handbook.

Adaptations

Many beds on campus are now longer than normal, but if you are particularly tall, please tell us in the additional notes field of the online application form.

There is also a range of accommodation adapted to suit students with disabilities. Further details can be sought from the Disabilities Adviser in Colleges & Student Life. Please let us know as early as possible of any additional specific requirements you may have with regard to your disability, or if you want to come and view a room. See our disabilities page for more information.
