Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education
The DLHE survey is a national survey of all those who have recently qualified from any university or HE college in the UK, providing a snapshot of graduate activities, i.e. the numbers in employment, further study / training or still seeking employment. Every university has a statutory duty to report to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) the destination of 80% of UK domiciled, fulltime students and 70% of EU students. There are two census dates every year. For 2007/08 graduates, those who completed their courses between 1 August and 31 December had a census date of 24 April 2008. Students who complete their courses between 1 January and 31 July had a census date of 12 January 2009. Despite there being two data capture reference dates, there is only one data collection - the return date this cycle was 31 March 2009.
Method of Data CollectionGraduates are initially sent a hard- copy of the 4 sided questionnaire with over 50 questions, although not all of these will be relevant to the individual respondent. Subsequently graduates who have not returned the questionnaire will then be contacted through a telephone follow-up when a shorter version of the questionnaire is used. An on-line version of the questionnaire is also available.
Analysis of DataIn May HESA commence analysis of all the DLHE data submitted by UK institutions. A press release is usually available around June / July providing an initial statistical analysis of the return. This is followed in September by the publication of national data in the HESA publication, ‘Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education’. Each University can also undertake analysis of its own data. The Careers Service (CEEC) uses the DLHE statistics to create profiles of each department's graduates and to gain a clearer understanding of what graduates do. This section allows you to see, by course, where students have found employment, if they are undertaking further study or still seeking employment.
