PREPARE FOR THE CAREERS FAIR - Heather Tomlinson, Careers Consultant

Many students view careers fairs as a chance to collect a couple of leaflets, have a wander around with a group of friends and maybe gather a few freebies along the way! This approach means you MISS OUT on a fantastic opportunity to take some steps towards securing a graduate job, internship or placement. In addition you can pick up some excellent tips on applications and interviews and find out what it’s really like to work for particular organisations from someone who was in the same position as you in recent years. It’s an excellent chance to network and make a favourable impression. This session helps you overcome the nerves, develop a game plan and stand out from the crowd – all of which result in you having a positive experience, whereby you leave a lasting (favourable) impression and give your career prospects a head start.
Open to students from all years

Lancaster Career Mentoring Programme

Connect with the world of work with your very own mentor!

The Lancaster Career Mentoring Scheme gives you an opportunity to spend time with a working professional, getting an insight into what they do and ask questions to help you analyse what you want to do with your future.

Career mentoring might include chatting with your mentor over a coffee to find out about their job hunting tips; skills development ideas or applications and interviews advice. They may even let you attend meetings or events with them to get an insight into their work.

IS IT FOR ME?
The scheme is available to any student of any degree scheme who is currently enrolled at Lancaster University who has completed at least one year of study - but will be of most benefit to students in their second year of study.

The characteristics of a good mentee include:
• Openness to new ideas, suggestions and feedback.
• Willingness to have a go and try out different things.
• Commitment to self-development and achievement of career goals.
• Ability to give and receive constructive and honest feedback.
• Skill in good organisation and time management.
• Willingness to take the initiative, communicate needs, desires and expectations.

The scheme is designed to be flexible for both mentors and mentees but you will need to commit at least 16 hours in total during the mentoring period (mid-November to May).

Applications for the 2012-13 Programme:

To apply to become a mentee on the 2012-13 programme which starts in November 2012 you will need to complete an application form online.  You will be emailed the link and you can only apply from Monday 11th June to Friday 22nd June  - ONLY FULLY COMPLETED FORMS WILL BE ACCEPTED

The matching process takes place over the summer vacation and you will be informed in October via email  if a successful match has been made.
