What is Counselling?

Counselling provides you with the time and opportunity to talk to someone about the issues in your life that are of most concern. Talking through these issues with a counsellor can help you to gain your own understanding of your situation and deal with the feelings. This can help you to manage and cope with your problems better, and seek out possible solutions for you.

For many Chinese students, counselling is something which is very new to them, and is a method of seeking help and support which they have not come across before. One of the things which can be difficult to understand is the nature of the relationship between the counsellor and yourself. The relationship is not hierarchical, and so the counsellor does not expect to be treated as a teacher, or as someone in authority, but rather as someone on the same level as yourself. The counsellor wants you to feel free to be able to explore anything which is of interest to you, and does not want to put any pressure upon you which may limit this exploration. For example, the counsellor does not want or expect you to be polite, respectful, or for you to be a 'good' student, but wants you to be able to be honest with yourself about what is of concern to you. Counsellors are used to working with people from another culture, and so they want you to be able to find a solution or a way forward for you which works within your cultural background, not against it.
