Relationships

Relationships are central to our lives. If you think about it for a moment we are all in a relationship of some kind with other people from the moment we are born. It follows that relationships of all kinds are of great importance, and indeed help to shape and develop our own personalities. Problems with relationships arise for most people at some time in their lives and this is one of the most common areas of life that people come to counselling about.

Just getting on with your house mates or the people you work with can be difficult or stressful at times. However, probably the most important of our relationships are with our family or the intimate relationship with a partner or valued friend. These can be a great source of love, pleasure, support and excitement. However, they can be a source of grief and anguish if they go wrong. The issue is made more relevant for students by the fact that most people in a university are in a period of personal change, which can make them feel less sure of what they want or how they can expect others to react.
