International Students - HomepageThe International Student Advisory Service is part of Student Based Services. The University recognises the importance of international students to the life of the University and aims to help prospective and current International students on a range of issues.
We provide information and advice on:
Pre-arrival informationWe provide extensive information and advice to new students about how to prepare for studying at Lancaster University, including guidance about obtaining visas, travelling to Lancaster, planning your costs, accessing medical care in the UK, the structure of the University and the support available to international students accompanied by their families. All this information is available on our web pages here.
Visa informationStudents can obtain important guidance about study-related immigration issues. This includes how to apply for a student visa in your own country as well as how to extend your visa in the UK. The service is also pleased to offer international students access to the Home Office 'Batch Scheme' as a quick and efficient way to extend your visa. We also provide information about rules governing students who want to work in the UK during their studies. Students needing more in-depth guidance can receive one-to-one support from the International Student Adviser upon request.
General Support for international studentsThe International Student Advisory Service provides many international students general guidance and support throughout their studies and acts as a central point of contact on many issues, including financial worries, adjustment or cross cultural difficulties and academic problems. Our service also organises a number or events in Introductory Week designed to assist new international students settle into life at Lancaster. Any student with a problem or concern can make an appointment to see the International Student Adviser for an informal, but confidential chat.
Information materials for international studentsIn addition to the Pre-arrival Booklet and the Travelling to Lancaster document sent to all prospective students, we also send out newsletters, once a term, with items of interest specifically to students in our international community at Lancaster. Advice leaflets on important topics are also available on these web pages and in hard copy format from colleges and The Base, A-Floor, University House. A handbook is sent to all new students coming to Lancaster with their dependant family members. Finally, urgent information bulletins are sent out from the International Student Adviser to all international students as necessary throughout the year.
Social and cultural activitiesThroughout the year the International Officer organises social events for international students. These start in Intro Week and continue during the year. Events include excursions to various part of the UK, for example York, Chester and the Lake District. These are advertised in a termly newsletter which goes directly to all international students. Other events have included an International Student Evening - a fun night of great food and entertainment - and evenings organised by local Rotary Clubs. We hope to see you at some of these events!
