Guidelines for ESRC Overseas Institutional Visit (OIV) Applications

All full-time ESRC studentship holders are eligible to apply for financial support for overseas institutional visits (OIVs) within their studentship period, to visit overseas Universities or esteemed research organisations.

This additional funding is intended to provide applicants with the opportunity to establish research networks, to disseminate early research findings, to participate in seminars and other academic activities that are directly relevant to their research, or to undertake specialist research training that is not available within the UK.

Students can only make one OIV application but that application can be for up to three separate overseas visits to the same host institution during the course of their studentship, as long as the total period of the visits does not exceed three months.

If possible your application should be scanned and submitted electronically to pgso@lancaster.ac.uk , if you are unable to provide a scanned copy please submit a hard copy to the Student Registry, University House. The application needs to be submitted at least three months before the intended date of travel. Applicants are advised to read the scheme guidance notes (PDF) before completing the application form (MS Word) .

The University is required to send applications to the ESRC in batches on the last working day of the month.  The ESRC will endeavour to ensure that applications are processed and considered by the OIV Panel in a timely manner, with decisions being communicated to HEI contacts within one month of receipt of application. The University will make payments directly to students.
