Customer Service Excellence

Confidentiality

Any contact you make with Student Based Services is confidential and will be treated with sensitivity, care and discretion. It will not be disclosed to third parties outside Student Based Services (e.g. academic staff, departmental staff, relatives, or external agencies) without your consent, except where required to fullfil administrative functions (e.g. contacting your department to arrange intercalation) or in the circumstances below.

There are very limited circumstances where we are legally obliged to break confidentiality:-

  • when we are asked by external agencies to disclose information and there is a legal requirement to do so ( e.g. Children Act 1989, Prevention of Terrorism Act 2002, Social Security Fraud Act 2001, Immigration and Asylum Act 1997, Special Needs and Disabilities Act 2001 ) .
  • when we may be required to do so by a University regulation, The Higher Education Statistical Agency ( HESA ) or the UK Research Councils (although this would not automatically apply in the case of any information held by Counselling)
  • if you are under 18 years of age and we have serious concerns about your well being
  • when we have significant concerns that you present a risk of harm to yourself or others

If you are concerned about confidentiality or would like further information we will be pleased to talk to you about the above, see 'contact us' from the top menu.
