Lancaster University Summer Schools

Here at Lancaster, we’re committed to widening participation and encouraging students from all different backgrounds to consider Higher Education. Each year we welcome over 6,000 students from schools and colleges across the UK to our campus. We believe that to help students make an informed university choice, there is no better way than to experience student life first-hand.

Our Summer Schools provide the opportunity for students to experience the different aspects that a university education can provide. We give students the opportunity to study a subject of their choice and develop key skills for HE including academic writing, presentation skills, and teamwork. We’re proud to be a collegiate university and students on our Summer Schools will be encouraged to take an active part in their given college, meet and make new friends and get involved in exciting sports and social activities that make up part of the Lancaster student experience.

When can I visit?

We offer a FREE programme of Summer Schools throughout the academic year, designed to give students a real insight into university life. Each of the Summer Schools we run focuses on a specific subject area for students aged 16 and above. However we also offer a programme for gifted and talented students and year 10 students.

What do students who attend our Summer Schools have to say?

"I had fun every step of the way and learnt far more than any prospectus or website could have taught me."

"An informative and fun experience, that helps you understand both the work and social side of university life whilst meeting like minded people."

"This week has been absolutely amazing. I have learnt so much, much more than I was anticipating. The ambassadors were helpful, understanding and fun! The lectures were amazing."

"Extremely enjoyable and informative. I enjoyed the experience of the medical school and also the competition between different colleges in the evening activities."

What do our academics say about the students they meet?

"It has been a pleasure to work with the year 12 students on their residential this week. I was impressed with their positive attitudes towards learning, each other, and to the ambassadors and me. I was surprised by how quickly the students were able to pick up the complex concepts I was teaching them, and particularly struck by their critical engagement, in that they questioned assumptions, conclusions and the logic behind the material I was presenting. I expect they will all do very well at University, and they would all be welcome at Lancaster."

“The Students were brilliant, engaged and very enthusiastic. They were curious and asked insightful questions, they were great to work with. They were better than our first year students”

“An exceptionally great selection of students, that showed great interest in the field of mobile phone development in particular mobile games. They worked individually and as a team, integrating everyone into the decision making processes. Everyone took ownership to their part in the project. “

“Enthusiasm, engagement and good understanding”

“The group have been lively and motivated. I’ve been extremely impressed and would be happy to work with them as medical students.”
