Writing for International Students in Engineering and Technology
This course, run in Michaelmas Term, is for international students (undergraduates and taught postgraduate students) in the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Health and Medicine.
The five workshops aim to help you to develop more effective technical writing skills. We look at:
- Writing scientific reports: report structure, writing an effective abstract, introductions, conclusions, the body of reports, paragraphs & topic sentences scientific language and grammar
- How to report other scientists' work: citation, referencing, summarising source material and avoiding plagiarism
- Writing a dissertation
Weeks 7-10 are run as a tutorial group, in which you can bring your questions and extracts from your assignment for discussion and feedback.

- Writing effective technical reports: Report structure (IMRaD) 2. Writing good abstracts.

- Writing effective technical reports: Problem solution patterns in reports. Differences between reports and essays conclusion. Connecting ideas in your reports; signposting structure.
