The faculty conference on 19 December was very successful. Colleagues from Science and Technology departments and centres presented their latest research and there was an excellent selection of posters. Nine posters were shortlisted, of which three were awarded prizes. Thanks to everyone who took part - we plan to hold another conference next year.
The winning posters will be available to view on the faculty pages from next week:
A number of organisations offer support for undergraduate research during the summer. All pay a grant to the student, some also pay other costs. Application is normally made early in the calendar year and requires a named student. This list is a summary of organisations known to the faculty who offer such grants:
Summer Grants for Undergraduate Research
The Mathematical Sciences Programmes of EPSRC are offering Statistical Mobility Fellowships to enable researchers without a permanent position and from a non-statistics background to move into statistics within 10 years of completing their PhD.
Each fellowship is to be linked to a statistics mentor who will be responsible for ensuring that the fellow will acquire the necessary statistical expertise and who will advise the fellow on the research project associated with the fellowship. The fellowship will be for 3 years with the expectation that in the first year the fellow will familiarise him/herself with the necessary statistical training while the second and third year will be spent carrying out research involving substantial innovation in statistical theory or methodology.
No previous expertise in statistics is necessary. The idea is to import skills into statistics from other numerate disciplines. It is envisaged that people with a background in physics, computer science, engineering and pure and applied mathematics will apply. However, there is no restriction on applicants' current area, except that they cannot already be statisticians!
If anyone is interested in this, Gareth Roberts (g.o.roberts@lancaster.ac.uk) would be very happy to discuss it.
A total fund of 10K is available to academic staff to support cross-faculty research and research-related activities in the Faculty of Science and Technology during 2005-06. Proposals which enhance the research reputation, raise the visibility and/or optimise esteem indicators of the Faculty are particularly welcome.

The Centre for Applied Statistics is running an extensive programme of short courses for staff and postgraduates in 2006. The majority are introductory and intermediate-level software-based courses, but others are available - staff/postgraduates pay £20-£40 for one or two day courses. The next courses to be held are:
