The 2006 Science and Technology Christmas Conference built on the success of 2005's inaugural event and seemed well received by all who attended.

Six Faculty PhD Studentships are on offer for the academic year 2007-2008. These Full-time PhD studentships will be funded over three years through a combination of reserves and departments' discretionary expenditure, and should be used to support the allocation of research students to early-career academic staff or staff who haven't previously acted as first supervisor. The deadline for applications is 30th March 2007.

Don't forget that funds are available to support teaching developments in the Faculty of Science and Technology during 2006-07. These will be given to activities which enhance the teaching reputation of the faculty at either an undergraduate or postgraduate level.
On Tuesday January 30th, a UK Research Office representative (Jo Frost) will give a presentation on Framework 7 at Lancaster University's Conference Centre. The event starts at 9.30am, all are welcome to attend.

The Engineering and Physical Science Research Council has announced a new call for applications to its Portfolio Partnerships scheme. The call is open now and closes at 16.00 on the 1st of February.
Portfolio collaborations enable stable funding for established research teams for a term of 5 years and allow interdisciplinary teams and inter-institutional team funding.

EPSRC has announced the latest call for proposals under the Follow-on Fund. The Follow-on Fund aims to help researchers bridge the funding gap between traditional research grants and commercial funding. Support is provided for the very early (pre-seed) stage of turning research outputs into a commercial proposition to enable them to be in a better position to attract support from venture capital or seed funds. The total funding available is £1.5 million and the closing date for applications is the 16th February 2007.
This is a call for participants to take part in a five-day sand-pit to look for innovative ways to address the problem of coping with extreme weather events.
