Pete Sawyer from Computing has been awarded £174,000 for SiNAPS, a one-year project funded by Electricité de France. The latest generation of nuclear Evolutionary Power Reactors (EPRs) are heavily dependent for their operation on software. Some of this software controls critical functions and SiNAPS will investigate whether the software can be assured to meet the required levels of dependability.
Jennie Gilbert from LEC, in collaboration with Prof David Pyle (University of Oxford), has secured funding for a project entitled "Ice-filled calderas in the 21st Century: consequences of volcanic unrest and environmental change". 20.000 Euros have been awarded by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior for fieldwork in the Andes. Chilean collaborators are from (1) the Servicio Nacional de Geologia y Mineria, (2) Centro de Estudios Cientificos and (3) Energia Andina. Dr Hugh Tuffen (LEC) and Dr Tamsin Mather (University of Oxford) are members of the team.
John Quinton from LEC has been awarded £399,573 from DEFRA to fund the ‘Mitigation Options for Phosphorus and Sediment’ project for a further two years. The funding will allow work to continue on using constructed wetlands for diffuse pollution control and allow investigation into their impact on greenhouse gas budgets and groundwater quality.

All are welcome to attend this two-hour talk from the Royal Society on Wednesday 24 February, which will cover all their grants and schemes, with informal input from a University Research Fellow, and the RSO and time to ask questions.
It provides an opportunity to find out about small grants that can help early career researchers build up a record of funding and opportunities for exploring overseas collaborations, as well as the prestigious fellowship awards.
