Undergraduate Admissions
Gordon Blower, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Teaching, writes:
The 2012 admissions round has been a success for FST. We will admit more undergraduate Home EU students in 2012 than in 2011, and come close to the ambitious target that we set. This cohort of students is the first group who will have the new fees regime. We are also likely to admit more Overseas students than in 2011, and exceed the target.
Engineering has enjoyed a particularly successful admissions round, increasing the intake of both Home/EU and Overseas students. Likewise, the School of Computing and Communication Systems has increased both Home/EU and overseas, while Mathematics and Statistics and Physics have increased their Home/EU entry. Geography achieved their high target for Home/EU students. Several departments have benefitted from having special degree schemes with overseas partners.
An important conclusion is that it takes about six applications to produce a single entrant. Hence I should like to thank all those who have participated in open days, visit days and recruitment events, which are essential for the success of the process.
Call for Science and Technology Research Imagery
The Faculty of Science and Technology is on the hunt for a visually interesting image of some of our current research. The image will be featured on the front of this year's Annual Report, and can range from a photograph or sketch to a graphic that captures some of the exciting work taking place at present within our departments. The chosen image can be edited, revised or enhanced so does not have to be in its final stages but a high resolution version would be necessary for the A4 space it will occupy. Please send all queries and suggestions to Jess Froude by Monday 8 October.
Associate Dean for Postgraduate Studies
Professor Awais Rashid's term of office as Associate Dean for Postgraduate Studies has been extended until July 2013.
A call for applications to take over the role from Awais will be issued later in the year.
Faculty Grants
Science and Technology Research Grants support cross-faculty research and research-related activities, including impact generation. For 2012/13 the amount available per grant has been increased to £2,500.
FST Conference Support can provide up to £1,000 per meeting for conferences organised by Lancaster University staff and run at Lancaster.
Calls for applications are now open. The deadline for both is Friday 5 October 2012.
Lancaster University Friends Programme
The next round of disbursement of funds from the Friends Programme will take place in December. Departments, colleges and individuals can apply for funding (most grants will be in the £2,000 - £3,000 category). More details, including some guidance notes and an application form, can be found on the Alumni web pages. Departmental applications should be submitted for authorisation by Friday 16 November.
