Energy and Fuels from Waste - Module 1

This module looks at Feedstocks and Technologies for Energy and Fuel Generation

It will give students a thorough understanding of relevant UK and EU regulations underpinning waste management, renewable energy generation and biofuels, a comprehensive knowledge of available technologies for fuel production, an awareness of alternative and renewable fuels, encompassing forestry materials and waste, an understanding of the economic and environmental benefits of diverting waste from landfill and an understanding of the physical and chemical properties of alternative fuels and their suitability for use in different waste to energy applications.

It will also give students an advanced working knowledge of non-thermal technologies (including anaerobic digestion, cellulosic biofuels and RDF/SRF production) and thermal waste to energy technologies (including incineration, gasification and combined heat and power (CHP)) plus an advanced understanding of advanced thermal technologies (pyrolysis and plasma arc gasification).

Students will learn about recent and novel techniques for converting heat to power, and about emerging technologies for the generation of fuels and energy from waste. The module will also provide students with an appreciation of the environmental considerations when selecting the suitability of different waste to energy technologies.

On completion of the module, students will be able to numerically and qualitatively assess different waste feedstocks, and to make informed decisions on appropriate technologies for their conversion to fuels and energy. Specifically, students will gain the ability to make decisions based upon the size, cost and scalability of technologies, the nature of the available feedstock, the predicted energy output, operational efficiencies, and economic opportunities/limitations.
